   April Clubhouse Evening

The Membership Services Committee is pleased to announce details of the April Clubhouse Evening.
 
For one month only, the clubhouse is moved from its usual third-Thursday slot to accomodate those members who wish to attend both the clubhouse and the screening of The Interpreter.
 
Come and join your fellow members for drinks and snacks at the Cat and Fiddle in Hollywood (6530 Sunset Blvd) between 6pm and 8pm.
 
You are welcome to bring a guest along, but our capacity is limited so it is important that you RSVP. Please cancel if you find you can no longer attend.

The Education and Outreach Committee present a three-part series of informal encounters with leading screenwriters and filmmakers to discuss their craft and professional experiences.

The moderator will be writer/producer John Alan Simon.

Topics will include (but not be limited to) adapting books for film and television and the challenges of straddling the indie and studio worlds.

ABOUT THE GUEST: Howard A. Rodman is a screenwriter and novelist. His films include the critically acclaimed Joe Gould’s Secret which opened the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. His television credits include several episodes of the Showtime anthologies Fallen Angels and The Hunger for directors Tony Scott, Steven Soderbergh, and Tom Cruise; the latter two of which garnered him Cable ACE nominations. Rodman’s original screenplay F was selected by Premiere Magazine as one of “Hollywood’s Ten Best Unproduced Screenplays.” Mr. Rodman’s own directorial debut No Radio was seen on Showtime.

Current film projects include an adaptation of the book Savage Grace for Killer Films and director Tom Karlin to star Julianne Moore; and an adaptation of the 1940s psychological thriller The Deadly Percheron for Fox/Searchlight directors David Siegel and Scott McGhee.

He is also writing a pilot for HBO entitled 213, produced by Grant Heslov, George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, to be directed by Rodrigo Garcia.

In September 2002, Mr. Rodman became chair of the Division of Screenwriting at USC’s School of Cinema-Television. He has twice been Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Labs.

   An Insider’s Guide to the New Film Tax Law

The United States Government has recently enacted into law the new 2004 Federal Tax Act which includes a section intended to stimulate film and television production in the United States. The section aims to curb runaway film and television production and is far reaching in it’s potential to generate jobs in the United States including jobs for foreigners.
 
Bill Sharmat, a long time BAFTA/LA member who has produced and promoted many films and plays throughout the world using tax efficient investment vehicles, will give a seminar explaining the new film tax code and answering questions about its many applications in today’s film and television financing world.

Note: This seminar is geared for those already familiar with the basics of film production financing as it relates to tax law.
